NI is a nonprofit, community-development corporation established in 1998 to create and expand healthy neighborhoods in three targeted areas of Hammond. In May of 2000 NI branched out to other communities in Indiana and Illinois, starting with Calumet City.

NI’s mission is: work to retain and promote, racial and ethnic diversity in the Calumet Region, principally through programs designed to increase homeownership opportunities, improve the quality of ALL housing and build neighborhood pride. NI uses its We’re Neighbors!/¡Somos Vecinos!, “Please, Have A Seat!”, Best House on the Block Contest®, Operation Restoration and other programs to enhance healthy neighborhoods and also offers micro-loans to the small business sector through a partnership with ACCIÓN Chicago and local banks.

See Programs for more details on these projects and where we’re currently working.
